How to become a Nature Steward

Are you fascinated by native animals, plants, rocks and Melbourne’s changing climate? If so, apply for our Nature Stewards program to become a local environmental champion.

Specially designed for people with little or no experience, the program is part of a movement to improve environmental literacy and stewardship in our communities.

It was founded by the McGregor family and created by Outdoors Victoria in partnership with a number of organisations concerned with the environment.

As a City of Sustainability, we are delighted to support the Nature Stewards program and bring it to our municipality. Applications to participate in the next round are open from 12 to 30 August.

Johnathan King went from nature novice to dedicated community advocate during the previous program in autumn. He said the program helped him develop knowledge, passion and contacts.

‘My main inspiration was to develop further knowledge about the environment and what we can do as a community to improve and sustain it,’ Johnathan said.

‘The Nature Stewards program was a great course that provided basic knowledge about multiple environmental issues.

‘It also opened my eyes to a variety of organisations that are operating to benefit our environment.’

Since completing the Nature Stewards program, many participants have reported improved wellbeing, a greater sense of community, and commitment to regular environmental volunteering.

Johnathan encouraged anyone interested to get involved in the Nature Stewards program.
