Students from around the world will come together in celebration from Saturday 7 to Friday 13 May for the inaugural Melbourne International Student Week.
We are supporting this event – an initiative of the Committee for Melbourne’s Future Focus Group Program – to help international students connect to new friends, careers, culture and wellbeing in Melbourne.
Here’s a small sample of what’s in store across the city.
1. Celebrate at Federation Square
Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 May
Come along to Federation Square to enjoy the best of what Melbourne has to offer during the opening weekend of Melbourne International Student Week.
2. See top student photography
Browse images that capture life in Melbourne, taken by international students. See entries to B-Friend’s International Student Photo Competition on big screen at Federation Square on 7 May, and at Kathleen Syme Library in Carlton from 10 May.
3. Practice speaking Spanish
Monday 9 May, 6pm to 8.30pm
Share your culture and celebrate Spanish language in a relaxed and welcoming environment, hosted by Wally and Linguas Australia. The Spanish Language Celebration is a great opportunity to deepen your cultural understanding through real-life language practice.
4. Learn how to land your dream job
Monday 9 May, 6.30pm to 9.30pm
Get advice from an expert recruiter about how to land your dream job in Australia. learn how to secure work while studying from employment industry experts. This Jobs and Career Coaching workshop will be held at Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre in Carlton.
5. Meet Aussie reptiles
Tuesday 10 May, 6pm to 8.30pm
Are you brave enough to meet an Australian reptile, like a snake, lizard or crocodile? Join us at The Couch – International Student Centre for Roaming Reptiles, an educational evening with Australian wildlife and a barbecue.
6. Share career tips over chai
Wednesday 11 May, 6pm to 8.30pm
Learn about the startup market, investment opportunities and career advancement strategies from Sanjith, founder of Dropout Chai Wala. Then enjoy snacks, chai, a silent disco and networking. Chai Meet will be held at The Couch – International Student Centre.
7. Dance the night way at African Night
Thursday 12 May, 6pm to 8.30pm
Make new friends and dance the night away at African Night, an evening of African culture jam-packed with delicious Senegalese food, performance, and a dance lesson in Afro-house and traditional Togolese styles. At The Couch – International Student Centre.
8. Deepen your understanding at the Immigration Museum
Thursday 12 May, 10.30am to 1pm
Experience a traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country, followed by a dance workshop by the Djirri Djirri dancers, a delicious and free lunch of Indigenous foods catered by Mabu Mabu, a museum tour, and a scavenger hunt. This International Student Welcome is a free event, but bookings are essential.
